Grace came from a sporty, athletic family; her mother was
a P.E. teacher, and her father was an Olympic gold medallist who encouraged his
children into physical pursuits.
Grace's brother also became a champion rower, but Grace
herself was deemed the un-athletic one of the family.
In early life she preferred playing with her dolls than
outdoors, but she did enjoy a girly type of exercise: ballet.
Grace studied ballet while she was young, hoping to become
a ballerina but, like Audrey Hepburn, she became too tall.
Ballet did leave it's mark on Grace, though - lithe figure
and limbs, and perfect posture.
Later in life, in a People magazine interview in 1982,
Grace stated that she stayed in shape by walking for at least an hour a day -
and very quickly.
When asked about if she dieted, Grace said: "I try to
avoid that as much as possible. A crash diet would make me nervous and
bad-tempered," she continued. "I do enjoy good food but try to eat
correctly, the right things. I am aware of the importance of having
well-balanced meals. We have whole-meal bread and whole rice, and I tend
to avoid sugar."
